Italian food is undoubtedly one of the most comforting foods out there. From chicken parmesan to gnocchi to alfredo, you simply can’t go wrong with Italian cuisine. There’s an endless selection of sauces, pastas, meats and cheeses, so pairing your proteins and fats or carbs and veggies is quite easy. Authentic Italian Food is Mostly Meat-Free: While Italians do consume meat and fish, they primarily ate fruits and veggies; their diet is commonly referred to as a “Mediterranean Diet.” Although Americans believe Italians eat a lot of veal, chicken, meatballs, sausage, etc., it’s the Mediterranean Diet that keeps them in such good health.

Don’t Overdue it with the Pasta Sauce: Italians generally use less than two tablespoons of pasta sauce, although many American restaurants who create Italian dishes will overdue it. In Italy, patrons are served large dishes of pasta with a dab of sauce.

Spaghetti & Meatballs aren’t Commonly Eaten Together: Generally meatballs and spaghetti will be labeled on the menu as two completely separate dishes.

Italian Espresso isn’t as Strong as American Coffee: When visiting Italy, you may see Italians drinking espresso late at night and although we consume it first thing in the morning, this isn’t true for Italians. The espresso in Italy has far less caffeine than American coffee so many Italians sip this with an evening dessert.

Desserts are Consumed Mid-Day: Pastries such as tiramisu, cakes and gelato are still consumed during dinner but more often than not, desserts are consumed mid-day. Italian prefers to indulge in sfogliatelle and guandi.

Prosciutto is Eaten More than Pepperoni: Pepperoni seems like a staple when it comes to Italian food but did you know prosciutto is consumed much more frequently than pepperoni?
